Kathmandu, March 10

The government of Nepal has decided to let nightlife businesses including bars and clubs run for the whole night. Until now, for want of a specified rule, local administrative bodies had been imposing ad hoc restrictions on their operations.

But, the Ministry of Home Affairs recently decided to lift all kinds of time restrictions so far imposed on the operation of hotels, restaurants, dance clubs and bars.

Earlier, Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand had commissioned a 14-member task force led by the ministry’s Peace and Security Division Chief Phanindra Mani Pokharel to make a recommendation about regulating the nightlife businesses. The team had recommended the round-the-clock operation.

Nonetheless, the government has imposed a set of rules on the operation of nighttime bars and clubs. According to the rules, the minors shall be barred from such places both as workers and customers. Likewise, performances should be recorded on the CCTV which authorities can ask for at any time.
