Nepal will send a 211-member contingent, including 135 athletes, to the 20th Asian Games to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4.
The final size of Nepal’s delegation was announced at a farewell ceremony held at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in Singha Durbar on Thursday.
Nepal had earlier planned to participate in 22 sports with 137 athletes. However, the number was reduced after one athlete each was withdrawn from breaking and wushu.
Nepal’s sole breaking athlete, Sunil Bamjan, will not participate, resulting in the withdrawal of the sport from Nepal’s Asian Games participation.
Of the 135 athletes who will compete in 21 sports, 57 are women and 78 are men. The contingent will also include 29 coaches, 17 team managers and two technical officials.
Nepal’s athletes will compete in archery (2), athletics (6), badminton (4), boxing (7), cricket (15), cycling (2), golf (4), judo (6), kabaddi (24), karate (8), rafting and canoeing (2), skate and skateboarding (2), soft tennis (4), squash (2), swimming (5), table tennis (6), taekwondo (3), tennis (5), volleyball (12), wrestling (6) and wushu (10).
The Asian Games’ basketball competition has already begun, with matches starting on September 10. The formal opening ceremony of the Games is scheduled for September 19.
Nepal will be looking to improve its performance at the continental sporting event, with athletes from across the country set to compete in a wide range of individual and team events.
