Need at least six months to prepare for polls: Nepal’s Election Commission

Kathmandu, August 29

Nepal’s Election commission says it needs at least six months to prepare for local elections.

The commission says because it would be the first time that local elections are being held under the new constitution, and new legislation would be required to conduct elections. It will take six months for the commission to prepare for elections, after the laws are enacted, officials say.

“In the case of local elections, we need around 120 days,” a commission official told Onlinekhabar. “We need the time to fix new polling stations, and update the voters’ list.”

The commission said it also needs the local administrative units’ boundaries to be finalised for it to work on conducting elections. A commission is currently working on the re-drawing of local boundaries.
