Kathmandu, November 8

Nepali Congress General Secretary Shashank Koirala has said his party is not in favour of amending the constitution to remove restrictions on naturalised citizens to become President.

Koirala, who was talking to mediapersons in Kailali, said even in the US and in India, naturalised citizens are not allowed to become President or Prime Minister. “Allowing naturalised citizens to become president would not be in the interest of the nation,” he said.

Koirala also said that the issue of religion should also not be raised in the current political situation. He added that all political forces should unite to amend the new constitution. On the proposal to impeach CIAA chief Lokman Singh Karki, Koirala said that the Nepali Congress wants to see the results of the investigation before it can speak on the issue.
