Kathmandu, October 2

Eight more bodies have been recovered from the Himlung avalanche in Narpa Bhumi Rural Municipality-5 of Manang, taking the death toll from the disaster to 15.

The avalanche struck the Himlung mountain area on September 27. Four bodies were recovered on Thursday morning, while four more were found later in the afternoon, according to Krishna Prasad Poudel, assistant chief district officer of Manang.

Seven bodies had been recovered earlier. One person remains missing following the avalanche.

“Two bodies have been brought to the district headquarters in Chame, while six have been brought to Phu village,” Poudel said. “It is already dark, so helicopters cannot fly. We will bring the remaining bodies on Friday.”

The bodies recovered on Thursday were transported by a Nepal Army helicopter.

Meanwhile, a Nepal Army team, in coordination with locals and other security agencies, is working to clear the Marsyangdi River at Thado Khola in Chame Rural Municipality-4, where the river has been blocked by a landslide.

The team is also working to restore the electricity transmission line that was disrupted by the landslide.

The avalanche occurred at the mountain’s base camp on September 27 morning. The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) has deployed an 11-member trained search and rescue team to the area.
