Morcha strike affects life in Terai towns

Kathmandu, March 7

Locals have taken to the streets in major cities in the Terai protesting the killing of three demonstrators in Saptari’s Rajbiraj on Tuesday as a Madhesi Morcha general strike has crippled the plains.

In Biratnagar, which was relatively calm on Tuesday, protestors have burn tyres on te road and obstructed traffic. In Bhairahawa, people crossing the Nepal-India border have been left stranded. Security has been upped in major cities of the Terai. In Siraha, supporters of the Morcha vandalised the UML’s local office.

The effect of the strike has also been felt in Saptari, Siraha, Dhanusa, Sarlahi, Bara and Parsa. In Janakpur, protestors encircled the local office of the National Human Rights Commission demanding probe into yesterday’s killings.
