Biratnagar, January 4

Minister for Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation Shiva Maya Tumbahangphe has warned of dissolving provincial assemblies.

The minister’s statement comes at a time when chief ministers belonging to the Oli faction of the Nepal Communist Party are facing no-confidence motions from lawmakers belonging to the Nepal-Dahal faction of the party. The party has been unofficially divided after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s decision of dissolving the House of Representatives.

Speaking with journalists in Biratnagar on Monday morning, Sambahangphe said political developments at the national level are certain to affect the provincial assemblies also, adding the government could dissolve them as per the constitution.

In another context, the former law minister also defended Oli’s move of dissolving the House. Although the constitution does not have a clear mention of the PM’s right to dissolve the House, she said, Oli’s act of seeking fresh polls was legal.

Tumbahangphe said the government was committed to holding elections on April 30 and May 10 as announced.
