Currently, some of you might be going through some kind of mental illness and you may be worried about finding the right therapist. We are saying this because a lot of cases related to attempted suicide and depression are coming out in Nepal of late.

Suicides happen and depression continues in absence of the right therapist. Hence, therapists are important people in your life whenever you are in a problem. But, it is a tough task to find a therapist that might be right for you. Some people go through a lot of hardships in the course of finding a genuine and well-skilled therapist, but we do not want any of you to go through a similar situation.

So, this week, Onlinekhabar has prepared a list of things that would enlighten you on a way to find the right therapist.

1. Comfortability

It is important to find a good therapist with whom you can feel comfortable discussing your problems.  Discussing problems comfortably is the most important factor when it comes to opening up. You might have to talk about uncomfortable matters, and probably need to share the things that you have not told anyone before.

2. Gender and age

Gender and age are two essential factors that you should consider while choosing the professional to provide you with therapy. You might ask yourself if you think you would feel more comfortable with a man or a woman and if you want to work with someone older, younger or around your age.

3. Therapist’s specialisation

It is really important to look at what your therapist specialises in. They might specialise either in anxiety, drugs, trauma-informed care, behavioural disorder and others. You should know about their expertise because they can best help you if they have specialised in the matters that you are going through.

4. Method of therapy

The next thing you should think about is how you want to approach treatment utilising theoretical orientation. It essentially denotes a unique style or technique for a specific situation. This one is tricky but understandable. If you believe your behaviour is influenced by an unconscious motivation or childhood trauma, you should consult a psychodynamic therapist. A cognitive therapist may be helpful if you want to change your beliefs and believe it will improve your life. Try a family-centred system therapist if you want to work on your family as well as yourself.

5. Questions to ask

Before meeting any of the therapists you must ask a few questions. That can be done through a phone call. This can allow you to know about them a little bit more.

Some questions could be: How often do you expect to see me? What are typical sessions like and how long are sessions? How do I prepare for my sessions? What is your general philosophy and approach to helping? What kind of homework or reading do you give to your client? Focus not only on what they say but also on how they respond to your questions.

The ability of the professional to convey warmth, genuineness and empathy is a key to their ability to form their therapeutic alliance.

6. Consulting your family, friends and coworkers

The review of family, friends, and coworkers can be extremely influential whenever you are looking for mental health therapy. It can also be the most helpful and realistic. You most likely have or have had some form of relationship with these folks in your daily life. You have faith in them since you are familiar with their personality, values, and styles. So, if they like their therapist or have had a positive experience with them in the past, there is a good chance it will be someone you enjoy working with.

Here is a list of mental health professionals you can contact if needed.
