Kathmandu, November 1
Mauritius has agreed to recruit workers from Nepal through a government-to-government (G2G) mechanism, with employers bearing the recruitment costs.
Nepal and Mauritius have moved forward with the process of facilitating labour recruitment through the G2G system, aiming to expand safe and dignified foreign employment opportunities for Nepali workers under the principle that employers should bear the costs.
The Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security said Mauritius had agreed to Nepal’s proposal to recruit workers through the G2G mechanism.
The High Commission of Mauritius in New Delhi formally wrote to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 29 and provided a revised draft of the memorandum of understanding (MoU).
The proposed agreement aims to expand employment opportunities for Nepali workers in sectors including manufacturing, construction, agriculture, tourism and information technology, with attractive salaries and benefits.
According to the ministry, the revised draft includes provisions for a government-operated worker recruitment mechanism, the selection of skilled and trained workers, recruitment procedures in accordance with the laws of both countries, employers’ responsibilities, workers’ rights and welfare, and repatriation after the termination of employment or expiry of contracts.
Earlier, on June 9, Minister Ramjee Yadav held a bilateral meeting with Mauritius’ Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, Mohamed Reza Cassam Uteem, in Geneva, Switzerland.
During the meeting, Minister Yadav proposed expanding labour cooperation through the G2G mechanism. Uteem said that employers were responsible for bearing recruitment costs. He also expressed interest in creating more employment opportunities for Nepali workers and organising an international job fair in Nepal.
Mauritius has pledged to finalise the revised draft MoU proposed by Nepal and move the process forward. The Ministry of Labour said the development would strengthen the government’s priority of expanding attractive, safe and dignified employment opportunities for Nepali workers.
