The Malaysian government has said it will not accept any new foreign workers. Home Minister Ahmed Jaheed made the announcement on Friday.

Jaheed, who was speaking at a programme in Sarwak, said the decision would be implemented with immediate effect. He said that new foreign workers would be allowed entry only after the government ascertains how many such workers are needed for the economy.

He said that the decision would also be applicable to workers from Bangladesh, with whom the government signed an agreement a day ago to allow 1.5 million Bangladeshis to work in Malaysia.

Malaysia is one of the most popular destinations for Nepalis seeking work abroad. In the last six months, more than 100 thousand Nepalis went to Malaysia for employment.
