Locals in Rajpur Municipality, Rautahat, have attacked Mayor Sheik Shakil after he refused to donate for Eid celebrations.
The incident happened on Tuesday night at Mahamudiya Mosque, witnesses at the scene said.
The locals were irked after the municipality, which offers money to local religious groups to observe different festivals. didn’t provide any monetary support for Eid celebration.
A local group led by Sheik Kasim beat up Mayor Sheikh Shakil after he finished his evening prayers.
“While I was at the mosque, a group approached me and asked for money. I told them that I didn’t have cash at the moment and would give them later on. But they yelled at me and hit me on the head with a torchlight,” said Mayor Shakil.
DSP Navin Karki confirmed that Shakil had been assaulted and said that the assailants were at large. “They have been identified and we are on the lookout,” said DSP Karki.
