Kathmandu, October 15

An influential leader of the Nepali Congress, the country’s largest political party in Parliament, has proposed that a referendum be held to allow the people to decide if they want a Hindu state or a secular one.

Sashank Koirala, whose party is also a part of ruling alliance, said,”Religion can never be absolute or relative… It is free from everything. That is why it would be appropriate to hold a referendum.”

Party General Secretary Koirala, who was speaking to mediapersons in Chitwan earlier today, said he was facing pressure from Nepali Congress leaders to remain mum on the issue of religion. “However, I was elected MP from Nawalparasi, a Hindu majority region. So I need to speak,” said Koirala.
