Kathmandu, May 4

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City will have five broomer machines to clean its dusty roads within next two months.

The Ministry of Finance has already released Rs 90 million to purchase the machines by the end of the current fiscal year (mid-July). Now, the KMC will invest other Rs 90 million on its own and purchase five machines, informs KMC Chief Executive Officer Ishwor Raj Paudel.

“We have asked the Mechanical Department under the Institute of Engineering, Thapathali Campus to provide suggestions about what kinds of broomers are appropriate for Kathmandu,” Paudel says, “The broomers should be friendly to our roads; therefore, we are studying technical aspects beforehand.”

The KMC is also sending a technical team to some cities of India to study the use of broomers. The team is very likely to go on the visit after May 14 local level elections.

The KMC is currently washing out dusty Kathmandu roads with water every night. The level of dust on most of Kathmandu roads has significantly increased in past few months owing to construction works to lay pipes for the Melamchi Water Supply Project.

After the purchase of broomer machines, they will also be used daily, according to Paudel.
