Parking fee

Kathmandu, July 18

Kathmandu metropolitan city has set parking fees for cars, motorbikes and scooters within the city.

The metropolis has divided the city into two zones and set parking fees accordingly.

Zone 1 included the core city area like New Road, Dharmapath, Kantipath, Durbarmarg, Tripureshwar, Ratnapark, Bhotahiti, Keshar Mahal and Lainchaur. Two-wheelers parked in these areas will have to pay Rs 25 per hour or Rs 15 per 30 minutes. For four-wheelers parked in Zone 1, the city government has set a fee of Rs 80 per hour and Rs 50 per 30 minutes.

The rest of the city has been classified in Zone 2 where two-wheelers are charged Rs 15 per hour while four-wheelers will be charged Rs 40 per hour.

Vehicles driven by differently-abled people will not have to pay a parking fee.

It is also mentioned in the city’s finance law that the person or organisation that conducts parking business in private buildings or land must obtain prior permission from the metropolitan corporation. The city has set a uniform rate for these parking lots too.

According to deputy mayor Sunita Dangol, the parking fee for two-wheelers and four-wheelers has been set at Rs 25 per hour and Rs 75 per hour respectively.

The city has also set a fee of Rs 15 and Rs 40 for two-wheelers and four-wheelers for 30 minutes. If people park their two-wheelers and four-wheelers for more than an hour, they will be charged Rs 5 and Rs 15 per 15 minutes.

She said this was being done to maintain uniformity as people complained there was no uniformity in parking prices across the city.

Meanwhile, Mayor Balen Shah has informed that according to the provisions of the finance act, commercial buildings (private marts, restaurants, shopping complexes, malls, hospitals and other health service providers) should provide free parking services to their customers.
