Jagat Baram becomes new chief of NEFIN, CPN-UML loses all seats to Congress-Maoist alliance

Jagat Baram has become the new president of National Federation of Indigenous Nationalities. Baram from the joint panel of the CPN-Maoist Centre, Nepali Congress, Federal Socialist Forum, RPP and Naya Shakti Nepal defeated Surya Bhujel from the CPN-UML by eight votes. The UML lost all seats at the ninth national convention of the federation.

Padam Gurung, president of NEFIN (Chitwan), said 31 votes went to Baram, 23 to Bhujel, while one vote got cancelled.

Centre’s candidates Ganesh Thakali and Krishna Kumari Thakali became vice-presidents.

Nityananda Tajpuriya from FSF clinched the position of general secretary. Tajpuriya polled 37 votes, whereas Tasi Hyalmu got 15 votes. Mukunda Pahari became treasurer (36 votes), while his opponent Premi Lal Chaudhary got 15 votes.

Prakash Bhujel, central secretary of Bhujel Society, informed that Sruti Kumal has won the position of NEFIN secretary.

The NEFIN general convention has added eight more members to the 13-member secretariat, Nagendra Kumal, outgoing NEFIN president, informed. NEFIN’s amended statute envisages eight vice-presidents and 10 secretaries, president (1), general secretary (1) and treasurer (1). It states that at least one vice-president, one secretary and five secretaries should be female.
