Indian Army chief Rawat arrives in Kathmandu

India’s army chief Gen Bipin Rawat has arrived in Kathmandu to take part in a cermony in which he will be conferred the title of ‘Honorary General’ of the Nepali Army.

Nepal and India have a tradition of conferring the title on chiefs of staff of each other’s army.

According to the Nepali Army, Rawat will be conferred the title amid a programme at the President’s office in Shital Niwas on Wednesday. President Bidya Devi Bhandari is also the supreme commander of the Nepali Army.

During his stay in Kathmandu, Gen Rawat will meet the Prime Minister, Defence Minister and chief of Nepali Army among others. He is also to visit the Indian Army’s pension camp in Pokhara and go on a pilgrimage to Muktinath and Pashupatinath.

Rawat, who hails from Uttarakhand state, was named 27th head of the Indian Army in December.
