Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has instructed IGP Basant Kunwar to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of a scooter rider who was struck by a truck at Gattaghar in Bhaktapur.

Expressing his sadness over the accident at Gattaghar, Minister Lekhak stated, “Is there any fault on anyone’s part in the Gattaghar accident? Is there any fault of our police force in this? Please investigate this matter thoroughly.”

On Thursday afternoon, a truck collided with a scooter near the Gattaghar intersection in Bhaktapur, resulting in the immediate death of the scooter rider. The truck with registration number NA 6 Kha 2173 hit the scooter with registration number BA 39 Pa 8944, causing the death of the rider, Uttam Koirala, from Okhaldhunga, according to the police.

Although the truck driver fled the scene, he was apprehended by the Kathmandu Metropolitan Police’s New Baneshwor Division in the evening and is now under the jurisdiction of the Thimi Division.

Following the incident, angry locals vandalised the truck and staged a protest by blocking the main road at Gattaghar. To control the situation, the police used tear gas.

Protesters expressed their frustration against the police, accusing them of causing the accident while stopping vehicles on the road for checks.
