Kathmandu, October 16

Amid various reports that local government officials including people’s representatives, were also involved in settling serious criminal cases such as rape and murder through community mediation, the federal government directed local units to carry out preventive programmes against such practices.

The Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration on Thursday issued a circular to the local units, telling them to stop the settlement of criminal cases without taking them to the concerned courts.

The ministry’s spokesperson Basanta Adhikari says, “There are reports that serious criminal cases are also settled through mediation. But, we have told local units to carry out necessary preventive and promotional activities.”

Earlier, the Office of the Attorney General had also told the government for such programmes and activities at the local level.
