The government has revised the National Building Code to reflect learning from studies conducted following the 2015 earthquake.

A meeting of the building construction management upgrading (consolidation) committee held recently under the chairpersonship of secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development passed the amended code.

The amendment was made after analysing earthquake risks and Nepal’s topography following the 2015 earthquake and aftershocks, and after extensive discussions with concerned stakeholders, said Nawa Raj Pyakurel, project director at the Central Project Implementation Unit of the National Reconstruction Authority.

A 13-member advisory committee led by chief of the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction under the Ministry of Urban Development had been formed to prepare building plans in accordance with the code.
