Kathmandu, May 16
The umbrella organisation of Nepali journalists has decided to stage a demonstration outside the Parliament building in Naya Baneshwar of Kathmandu, demanding that the lawmakers do not extend their support to the endorsement of Media Council Bill.
Journalists will demonstrate carrying their communication equipment outside the House on Friday, according to the Federation of Nepali Journalists. Members of the FNJ in other districts will carry out similar demonstrations in district headquarters.
Whereas the government has recently registered the bill at the Parliament Secretariat, the FNJ wants the government to withdraw it citing it introduces a range of restrictive provisions against the freedom of press.
The FNJ has also launched a weeklong protest programme against the bill. The FNJ says it will gradually launch other programmes unless the bill is not withdrawn.
