In five photos: Nepal observes first Constitution Day

A special ceremony was organised in Kathmandu to mark the first anniversary of the promulgation of Constitution of Nepal on Monday.

According to a government decision, Nepal will from now on observe Asoj 3 (September 19) as its national day as well as the Constitution Day to commemorate the promulgation of the Nepal Constitution through Constituent Assembly.

Similarly, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Deputy Prime Ministers Bhimalendra Nidhi and Krishna Bahadur Mahara, Ministers, lawmakers and senior leaders of the political parties and other high ranking officials participated in the ceremony.

On the occasion, a contingent of the Nepal Army presented a guard of honour for President Bhandari. She was welcomed by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal who is also the chairman at the Constitution Day Main Celebration Committee.

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Monday asked all political parties to help create a conducive environment for elections without taking into account political gains or losses.

As per the new Constitution, government should conduct local, provincial and federal elections, tentatively, within January 20, 2017. But parties are yet to agree on the number of local levels and their boundaries, among others.

The event also saw the participation of people from different walks of life, who were clad in their traditional attire. Various government agencies showcased their flagship porgammes.
