EU poll observation mission’s report objectionable: Nepali Congress

Nepali Congress spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma addresses a press meet, in Kathmandu, on Tuesday, February 20, 2018.

Kathmandu, March 26

Nepal’s main opposition party, the Nepali Congress says the contents of the report prepared by the EU’s Election Observation Mission to Nepal is objectionable.

The mission went beyond its jurisdiction to criticise Nepal’s constitution, says spokesperson Biswa Prakash Sharma referring to the controversial report which calls for an end to reservation for the Khas/Aryan community. Sharma says that the Nepali Congress has reminded to EU to remain within its limits when conducting activities in Nepal.

“The EU’s observer mission was here to observe the polls, but their report also dealt with issues related to the constitution. This was clearly outside the mission’s jurisdiction,” said Sharma, who was talking to mediapersons after the party’s central working meeting on Monday.

Nepal’s foreign ministry has already condemned the report; the Election Commission has said it is unacceptable. However, the EU says that report was prepared by complying with international norms, and it was up to the government to accept or reject the suggestions made therein.
