Prior to general elections, Facebook disables MRR group

Kathmandu, October 30

Popular Facebook group in Nepal, Men’s Room Reloaded (MRR), has been disabled by Facebook’s parent company Meta.

Meta has said the group was disabled for violating community guidelines.

The group was primarily formed to discuss men’s issues and share jokes and other posts, but the group was recently actively promoting political agendas before the general elections. That is what the admins of the group feel resulted in the group being disabled.

An admin of the group said Facebook’s AI has disabled the group and adds they do not know what post violated the community guidelines of Facebook.

Earlier in the month, the Election Commission and Meta held a meeting in Kathmandu, where the commission had told the social media company to stop posts that spread hate and misinformation regarding the oncoming federal and provincial elections.

Many believe this has to do something with disabling the MRR group. The group admins have asked Facebook to reinstate their group.

MRR, during the local elections, played a significant role in helping Balen Shah become the mayor of Kathmandu. The commission felt that the group would somehow affect the federal and provincial elections too.

MRR’s group had been disabled in 2020 too.
