Kathmandu, June 26

Dr Govinda KC, professor at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj, announced on Sunday that he will start a hunger strike from July 10 if the Legislature-Parliament does not address his four-point charter of demands, including initiation of a process for the impeachment of Lok Man Singh, chief commissioner at the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority.

Dr KC accused Karki, a public official supposed to control corruption, of indulging in corruption himself. He blamed Karki for promoting medical colleges of his relatives by blackmailing government officials concerned. Dr KC made the hunger strike announcement by organising a press conference at the hospital.

He charged Karki with shielding the corrupt and intervening in the entrance examinations of Kathmandu University by going beyond his jurisdiction. KC then called the Parliament to initiate impeachment process against Karki and also take action against other CIAA commissioners.

Dr KC has also called the House to make five amendments in the draft Medical Education Act and enact it into law and urged the government to implement agreements reached with him, among others. Dr KC has threatened to launch a fast-unto-death within two weeks if the concerned bodies do not address these demands by then.

Earlier too, Dr KC had staged hunger strikes, demanding reforms in medical education and establishment of medical colleges in remote parts of Nepal.
