Heath Ministry sounds caution after Covid sub-variant found near border points

Kathmandu, January 3

The Ministry of Health and Population has issued a cautionary notice, urging heightened vigilance due to the escalating risk of the JN.1, a Covid sub-variant.

The infection rate of the Covid sub-variant JN.1 is on the rise globally, with confirmed cases in neighbouring India. Although no cases have been verified in Nepal, a potential threat of infection spread exists.

Consequently, the Ministry of Health says the importance of following public health standards, including using masks, maintaining physical distance, and placing special emphasis on hand hygiene, especially in crowded places.

Cases of Covid infection are slowly being found near the Nepal-India border. Dr Prakash Budhathoki, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health said it was better to be vigilant now.

Given the increasing infections of the Covid sub-variant, the ministry has implemented measures such as screening and monitoring at all help desks in entry points, health institutions providing health services, and involving all stakeholders. These efforts are part of the preparedness for effective Covid management.
