Constitution Amendment: Gulmi general strike enters 14th day

Kathmandu, December 12

A general strike in Gulmi, a hill district in western Nepal, to protest the government’s bid to redraw the boundary of Province 5 entered its 14th day on Monday as demonstrators take to the streets shouting anti-government slogans.

According to local reports, strike enforcers shut down markets is district headquarters Tamghas, and surrounding areas. They have also not allowed buses to ply.

General life remains paralysed in Baletaksar, Ridi, Khairini, Shantipur, Majua, Bhuwachidi and Bamitaksar. Demonstrators continue to picket government offices in the district demanding that the amendment bill to remove hill districts from Province 5 be withdrawn.

Meanwhile, leaders of the agitation are organising a rally in the district headquarters later in the day. Nepali Congress Central Committee member Chandra Bhandar, UML’s Pradeep Gyawali and Maoist Centre’s Top Bahadur Raymajhi are expected to address the demonstrators.
