Kathmandu, January 6

CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli said on Friday that the government-sponsored Constitution amendment proposal, which seeks to redraw Province 5, has undermined national unity and demands of local people, who are against realignment of the province’s boundaries.

Oli, speaking at the protest assembly of nine opposition parties in the Capital, said the government was trying to push forth the amendment proposal, which seeks to redraw Province 5, through the House, despite opposition from the people of the province.

No matter what, we will not allow the Parliament to act against national interest, he said.

He accused the government of pushing forth the Bill at the order of some foreign forces. Oli further slammed efforts aimed at showing the seeds of hatred between the mountains and the Tarai. Pointing at the presence of people from the Tarai in their protest, he warned all concerned not to question their patriotism.

At the programme, Oli also announced the launch of a Mechi-Kali campaign from the second week of Falgun.

The Capital has woken up and the Valley has woken up. There’s a need to spread this awareness throughout the country and make sure that the House rejects the amendment proposal.

Referring to the protest, Oli said: The Capital has woken up and the Valley has woken up. There’s a need to spread this awareness throughout the country — in the Himalayas, the Hills and the Tarai — and make sure that the House rejects the amendment proposal.

What he said

  • The Amendment Bill has undermined the voices of people from Province 5, who are against changing its boundaries
  • The Bill is against national interest. The government brought the Bill at the behest of foreign powers
  • Don’t question the patriotism of people from the Tarai
  • Efforts are on to sow the seeds of hatred between the mountains and the Tarai. We slam this nefarious design
  • From the second week of Falgun, the UML will launch a Mechi-Kali campaign
