Congress and UML agrees on 20-month rotation for chief minister in Bagmati

Hetauda, July 23

The Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) (CPN-UML) have reached an agreement to alternately lead the government in Bagmati Province for the remainder of the provincial assembly’s term.

On Tuesday, Congress Chief Whip Govinda Lamsal announced that leaders of the two parties agreed to share the remaining 41 months of the provincial assembly’s term, with each party leading the government for 20 months.

In the first phase, Bahadur Singh Lama, the leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party, will assume the role of Chief Minister. According to the new agreement between Congress leader Lama and UML parliamentary party leader Jagannath Thapaliya, the Congress will take charge of the Ministry of Financial Affairs, while the UML will oversee the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure.

This agreement marks a revision from an earlier arrangement made on Tuesday morning, which had allocated the Ministry of Financial Affairs to the UML and the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure to the Congress.
