Kathmandu, February 4

A fire broke out at Chunikhel Nayabasti in Budhanilkantha Municipality-13, Kathmandu. Seven people were rescued from the affected area.

The fire started at around 10:45 pm on Tuesday and was brought under control by about 1:15 am with the help of fire engines from Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Budhanilkantha Municipality, and Tokha Municipality.

According to Ward Chair Tika Narayan Shrestha, a long shed comprising 24 rooms was destroyed in the fire. “People from various districts had been living there in rented rooms. A total of 24 families have been displaced,” he said.

The displaced families have been temporarily accommodated in nearby sheds. Preparations are underway to provide them with relief materials, including food and clothing, today.

A preliminary assessment suggests that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Details of the total damage have yet to be ascertained. Ward Chair Shrestha said that a formal assessment will be carried out today in coordination with the police to determine the extent of the losses.
