Cameron Green becomes IPL’s most expensive overseas player

Kathmandu, December 16

Australian all-rounder Cameron Green has become the most expensive overseas player in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

During the IPL auction held on Tuesday, Green was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders for INR 25.20 crore. Previously, the record for the most expensive foreign player was held by fellow Australian Mitchell Starc, whom Kolkata bought for INR 24.75 crore at the auction for the 2024 IPL season.

However, despite being contracted for INR 25.20 crore, Green will not receive the full amount. Under new IPL regulations, a maximum salary cap has been set for overseas players. According to the rule, the maximum amount a foreign player can receive is equal to the highest retention price from the previous mega auction, which currently stands at INR 18 crore.

If a team bids more than this limit at the auction, the excess amount will not be paid to the player. Instead, the additional sum will be transferred by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to a player welfare fund. As a result, Green will receive no more than INR 18 crore.

The rule aims to prevent excessive price inflation for overseas star players in mini auctions. The regulation does not affect Indian players, for whom no such salary cap has been imposed.

Meanwhile, the most expensive player in IPL history overall is India’s Rishabh Pant, who was signed by the Lucknow Super Giants for INR 27 crore at the auction for the previous season.
