A bullet has been removed from the body of a young man who was injured Saturday evening in a clash between two groups in Madhya Harshahi, Dewanganj Rural Municipality-1, Sunsari.
A group of 8–9 people opened fire in Madhya Harshahi, injuring 24-year-old resident Niraj Kumar Yadav. He was admitted to Nobel Medical College, Biratnagar, immediately after the incident. Sunsari District Police Office spokesperson, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chandra Khadka, said the bullet was removed from his body through surgery Sunday morning.
According to him, the bullet removed from the body appears to be from a homemade (locally-made) pistol, but the type of weapon used will only be confirmed after ballistic testing.
Yadav was shot on the right side of his lower back. Since neither the weapon nor a shell casing was found, police had earlier said it would only become clear after surgery whether he had been shot or injured some other way. Police said a medical team removed the bullet through surgery.
Police said an investigation is underway against 18-year-old Bishnu Kumar Yadav and 26-year-old Jay Krishna Yadav, also known as Lali, both of Dewanganj Rural Municipality-2, who were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident. After the shooting near the village, locals had overpowered Bishnu and Jay Krishna and tied them to a tree; they were handed over to police upon arrival. Their motorcycle was also set on fire. DSP Khadka said police are searching for other individuals believed to be involved.
Niraj was shot Saturday evening while returning home on a motorcycle with his neighbour Bibek Kumar Yadav from Harinagar Bazar. The group that opened fire also assaulted Bibek.
“There are reports that this may also be linked to an old rivalry and a dispute over a young woman,” Khadka said. “We are investigating this angle.”
On July 26, three people were killed and seven injured when police opened fire during a clash between two groups in Kaptanganj, Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3.
