Australian officials establish identity of Nepali student found dead at Maroubra Beach

Sydney, February 14

Australian officials have established the identity of a young Nepali student found dead at the Maroubra Beach in New South Wales. They identified the dead as Shristi Bhandari (21). They identified another person, who is believed to have gone swimming in the sea with Bhandari, as Sandip Upreti (27) of Birtamod, Jhapa district.

Bhandari and Upreti, students at New South Wales University, had gone to the beach on Monday evening. While their students returned, they stayed on the beach, saying they will return sometime later.

A search and rescue team found Shristi’s body at the northern section of the beach at around 6 am on Tuesday.

Police said Bhandari drowned to death. They said they have retrieved personal belongings of the two from the beach.

So far, we have not been able to find the youth, who was with the dead woman at the time of the incident, police said, adding: While a search is on, bad weather is posing a challenge.

Police guess that the two may have dived into the sea together.
