At Ananda Bazaar, Nepalis stand for sovereignty, rise against SSB excesses

Kanchanpur, March 9

Locals of Ananda Bazaar, Kanchanpur district, have risen in protest after SSB personnel entered the Nepali territory, threatened them to leave the area and beat them.

Neighbours clash

The locals clashed with their neighbours — Indians living in nearby Indian territories. These sporadic clashes have caused tension along the Nepal-India border.

Cause of the dispute

A dispute has ensued between Nepal and India with SSB threatening Nepali authorities to stop the construction of a culvert at Ananda Bazaar, claiming that it lies in India. Protesting SSB’s excesses, Nepali peoples shut the border with India from 9 am on Thursday and shouted slogans against Indian intervention. Sometime later, SSB personnel barged into the Nepali territory and thrashed some Nepalis, escalating the tension. After the SSB action, Ananda Bazaar locals started throwing stones across the border.

Presently, Indian and Nepali security authorities are trying to bring peace. Nepal Police and Armed Police Force are asking local peoples to exercise restraint.

At Ananda Bazaar, security personnel have mobilised under NP and APF inspectors. Robendra Singh Deuja, DIG (Far-Western Region), said they have sent reinforcements to the affected site from Mahendranagar. He said both sides are forging coordination and trying to bring the situation under control.
