Police have formed a special investigation committee to probe Inam Sapkota after his alleged connections with several high-profile individuals began to emerge.
The committee is led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Narahari Regmi, who is currently serving at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office in Ranipokhari. An official said Regmi’s team had begun investigating Sapkota, who is in the custody of the Kathmandu District Police Range.
The team is also assisting and guiding investigators from the district police range, according to the official.
Sapkota was arrested after police received information about his alleged links with former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana and claims that he was involved in arranging deals within the judiciary. As the investigation has progressed, further alleged connections with prominent figures have come to light.
Those reportedly linked to Sapkota include the chief justice, other judges, senior Nepal Police officers, Armed Police Force officials, businesspeople, government employees and lawmakers.
Sapkota was initially detained on charges of indecent behaviour after being arrested at Tribhuvan International Airport while preparing to travel to Delhi. Investigators have since begun probing him on suspicion of money laundering.
A forensic examination of his mobile phone has reportedly revealed a network of alleged connections with high-profile individuals, prompting further investigation.
