Kathmandu, October 29

The Nepal Layers Poultry Farmers Association has raised the wholesale prices of eggs again, citing increased market demand with the festive season underway and winter setting in.

The association revised the prices just six days after setting the previous rates at a meeting in Kathmandu on October 23. The new support prices were decided at a meeting held in Pokhara on Thursday.

Under the revised rates, the price of a crate of extra-large, large and medium eggs has increased by Rs 200, while the price of small eggs has gone up by Rs 100.

According to the association, a crate of extra-large eggs weighing 14.5 to 14.8 kg now costs Rs 3,900, up from Rs 3,700 set on October 23.

Similarly, the price of a crate of large eggs weighing 13.5 to 13.8 kg has risen from Rs 3,600 to Rs 3,800. Medium eggs weighing 12.5 to 12.8 kg now cost Rs 3,700 per crate, compared with the previous price of Rs 3,500.

The price of small eggs weighing more than 11 kg per crate has increased from Rs 3,100 to Rs 3,200.

Association Secretary Madan Pokharel said consumption had risen sharply relative to production as temperatures dropped and the festive season increased demand.

“It is currently the festive season, and the cold winter weather has also begun. Demand for eggs has surged because of both factors,” Pokharel told Onlinekhabar. “The support prices have been set to manage supplies in line with demand and ensure farmers receive a fair price based on their production costs.”

Despite the increase in wholesale prices, the association said it had not changed the retail prices paid by consumers. At retail outlets, large eggs are priced at Rs 25 per egg, while medium eggs cost Rs 45 for two. The association has asked depots, distributors and traders to conduct transactions at the newly set prices.
