Concern over the effects of Cyclone Arnab, which developed in the Bay of Bengal, has reached Nepal too. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has urged caution, citing the risk of heavy snowfall, snowstorms and avalanches in the high hills and mountain regions.
Meanwhile, the District Administration Office in Dolpa has asked tourists in the tourist areas of Upper Dolpa to stay alert.
According to the office, 244 tourists have gone to Upper Dolpa. Of them, 149 are Nepali, 44 are from SAARC countries and 51 are other foreign nationals.
In view of the possible risks, the administration has asked tourists and residents of the mountain areas not to go to risky locations. Those already there have been asked to move to safe places.
The office has said it will not issue trekking permits for restricted areas during this period. It has also asked trekking agencies, trekkers, guides and others concerned to follow the notice and to ensure that others do so as well.
Chief District Officer Junu Hamal has called on all stakeholders to act responsibly. She said this is needed to stay safe from the risks the cyclone may cause and to minimise possible loss of life and property in any disaster.
The administration has also asked that the safety of Nepali and foreign nationals in tourist areas be ensured, and that risky journeys not be made when the weather is unfavourable.
