Govt to provide Rs 35 million in grants for film production

Kathmandu

The government is set to provide grants worth up to Rs 35 million for film production under various categories to promote original films highlighting Nepal’s culture, history and tourism.

The Ministry of Information and Communications has invited applications from interested individuals and organisations, which must be submitted within 21 days of the notice’s publication.

Under the newly approved Procedure for Providing Incentive Grants for Films of Cultural and National Significance, 2083 BS, a single film can receive grants totalling up to Rs 9.5 million for scriptwriting, production and post-production.

Grants of up to Rs 500,000 will be available for scriptwriting, Rs 7 million for production and Rs 2 million for post-production. Up to five films can receive scriptwriting grants, three production grants and five post-production grants.

Eligible films must feature original and distinctive stories that promote national unity, social harmony, sovereignty, history, tourism or culture. Scripts must be registered with the Copyright Registrar’s Office. Films must be no longer than 90 minutes and shot using 4K cameras. The use of artificial intelligence in film production is prohibited, and grant money cannot be used to purchase equipment or materials.

Applicants must submit a citizenship certificate, a complete script including dialogue, a digital copy and proof of copyright registration. Production and post-production applicants must also provide permission from the Film Development Board, a detailed work plan and an estimated budget.

A selection committee coordinated by a ministry joint secretary will evaluate applications. Selected applicants will initially receive 20 per cent of the grant, with the remaining amount released in instalments subject to specified conditions and recommendations from the Film Development Board.
