Kathmandu, October 27

Four people have been arrested for allegedly defrauding people by posing as employees of Khalti, a mobile payment service.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Subham Kumar Jha, Aniket Kumar Yadav, Pawan Kumar Chaudhary and Rishi Ganga.

A team from the District Police Range, Bhaktapur, arrested them.

According to police, the suspects allegedly lured victims by making claims such as, “I am a Khalti employee. Your KYC needs to be updated, or your wallet will be blocked. I can link your bank account to your wallet, provide an e-speaker that announces incoming payments to your business account, and enable fund transfers without charges.”

Police said the suspects contacted victims by phone and through audio and video calls on WhatsApp, gained their trust and persuaded them to share their screens. They then obtained one-time passwords (OTPs), gained unauthorised access to the victims’ bank accounts and allegedly defrauded them.
