The Nepal Red Cross Society, in collaboration with Bidur Municipality, has launched a comprehensive response to the recent floods in the Bhotekoshi area, providing immediate financial assistance of Rs 100,000 to affected families.
The initiative was announced by Jagan Chapagain, secretary-general and CEO of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), during his visit to the flood-affected areas.
The partnership aims to address immediate humanitarian needs while supporting recovery, rehabilitation and resilience against future disasters.
The agreement outlines several areas of cooperation, including healthcare, water and sanitation, housing support and economic recovery.
The Red Cross plans to support 1,000 families in restoring their livelihoods, provide rental assistance to 2,000 households until permanent housing solutions are found, and directly manage assistance for 600 households.
Additionally, the Red Cross will repair a 7.5-kilometre pipeline of the Bidur water supply project, benefiting approximately 30,000 people. It will also focus on restoring health and educational infrastructure.
A joint coordination committee will be established to oversee programme implementation and ensure effective management and monitoring.
Red Cross officials emphasised the importance of coordination with local authorities for successful programme implementation. Local officials expressed optimism that the collaboration would significantly support the rehabilitation of affected communities and improve their living conditions.
