Kathmandu, October 9
Nepal are guaranteed to finish outside the top four in the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 after Oman defeated Canada on Friday, ending their hopes of qualifying directly for the Cricket World Cup Qualifier.
Nepal will now have to take the playoff route to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive. In the previous cycle, Nepal secured a place in the World Cup Qualifier by finishing in the top four.
Oman’s victory over Canada took their tally to 33 points from 29 matches, beyond Nepal’s maximum possible total of 32 points. Nepal have 24 points from 32 matches and cannot catch Oman even if they win all their remaining games.
The top three positions in League 2 have already been decided. The United States have been crowned champions with 47 points from 34 matches, while Scotland have 45 points from 36 matches and the Netherlands have 38 points from 32 matches.
Oman occupy fourth place with 33 points from 29 matches, followed by Namibia with 29 points from 34 matches and Canada with 25 points from 33 matches. Nepal are seventh with 24 points from 32 matches, while the UAE sit at the bottom with 19 points from 30 matches.
A series involving the United States, Namibia and the UAE is currently underway. Namibia and the UAE are scheduled to face each other later on Friday.
Nepal will play Canada on Sunday as they look to finish their remaining League 2 fixtures on a positive note.
