Congress must remain united as country faces uncertain situation, says Angdembe

Nepali Congress parliamentary party leader Bhishmaraj Angdembe has called for unity within the party, warning that the country is going through a complex situation in which national interests could face serious challenges.

Addressing the Nepali Congress general convention, Angdembe said the party should not split at a time when the country could face circumstances that could destabilise it.

“We do not know when they might turn the country into Ukraine, so the Nepali Congress must not break apart or split,” he said.

Angdembe said party leaders should focus less on competition for leadership and instead build trust in the leadership and move forward together. He said people ranging from 18-year-old youths to citizens above 80 had placed their trust in the party’s leadership.

He also argued that the Nepali Congress should not limit itself to being a party focused solely on forming governments.

“There now needs to be a debate on whether the Nepali Congress is merely a party that forms governments or a party that builds the country,” he said. “If the party is made merely a means of gaining power, we will return to the same situation again.”

According to Angdembe, the party has drifted away from its political principles and ideology by repeatedly aligning itself with different forces and tendencies in pursuit of power.

He said the party needed to learn from the consequences of putting power at the centre of its politics.

“We should not merely change faces; we should provide direction to an era,” Angdembe said.

He called on the Congress to engage more seriously with national issues and connect its political agenda with nationalism and the country’s pressing problems.

Angdembe also expressed his commitment to inclusive leadership and said all factions and groups within the party should be taken forward together.

“Bhishma Angdembe is committed to taking everyone along,” he said.

He stressed the need to unite party leaders and cadres across all districts to strengthen the organisation and its leadership.

Angdembe expressed hope that the Congress would emerge from the general convention with renewed energy and ideas, while urging the party not to deviate from its core political principles and ideology.
