Ranjit Karna announces candidacy for Congress general secretary

Kathmandu, October 5

Leader Ranjit Karna has announced his candidacy for general secretary of the Nepali Congress. He made the announcement at a press conference in Kathmandu.

The party’s 15th General Convention is under way. Karna, a former president of the party’s student wing, the Nepal Student Union, has announced his candidacy for general secretary.

Karna, currently a member of the National Assembly, said in announcing his candidacy that the Congress has not become weak. Rather, he said, the organisational energy within the party has been declining.

“It is not that the Congress has no history of ideas. The effort to connect those ideas with today’s generation has become weak,” he said. “It is not that the Congress has no leaders. The door to bring the new generation into leadership is not open enough.”

He also spoke about what his own role would be.

“Today I have not come merely to ask for the post of general secretary. I have come to start a new debate within the Congress,” he added. “The time has come for us to ask ourselves serious questions. Why is Congress membership becoming only a number? Why are workers made to wait for instructions instead of being partners in decisions?”
