Resham Chaudhary, founder of the Nagarik Unmukti Party, has expressed confidence that Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa can lead the country.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the Nepali Congress’ 15th General Convention in Kathmandu on Sunday, Chaudhary said Thapa, who played a role in the struggle for the establishment of a republic, could now play a leading role in building the country.
“Gagan can lead this country. I have faith in him,” Chaudhary said. “The person who played a role in bringing the republic will certainly play a role in building this country as well.”
Chaudhary also said the Nepali Congress had played an important role in drafting the Constitution and that recent changes within the party had strengthened his confidence in it.
However, he criticised the implementation of constitutional rights for marginalised communities, including the Tharu community.
He said rights had been written into the Constitution but had not been delivered in practice.
“Rights were written into the Constitution, but they were not given. Identity cannot be traded away,” Chaudhary said.
