Mustang, October 4
Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming and a seven-member team reached Lomanthang in Upper Mustang on Saturday via the Korala border point.
Mustang’s Chief District Officer Ajita Sharma said, “The Chinese ambassador has come to Mustang from Korala. We have not received detailed information about the visit.”
The ambassador is on a three-day visit to Lomanthang. Five members of the team are Chinese. They are scheduled to leave Lomanthang today and head toward China via the Korala border point.
According to Tashi Norbu Gurung, chair of Lomanthang Rural Municipality, the Chinese ambassador has come to Mustang to assess the situation at the Korala border point.
The ambassador’s visit is seen as significant at a time when there are demands to reopen Korala. The Kerung Bhotekoshi route, which had become an alternative to the long-closed Tatopani border point, has been turned into a riverbed by flooding.
Since the closure of the Rasuwa and Tatopani border points, the Mustang Customs Office has been collecting about Rs 300 million in revenue daily.
