Former Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has advised journalists to be mindful of journalistic norms and practices when asking questions.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday as he left a meeting of the UML’s election review and restructuring task force at the party’s central office in Chyasal, Oli suggested that journalists follow the international practice of asking permission before posing a question, and also informing the person before publishing what they said.
Oli said that the standard convention in journalism worldwide is to first ask whether a question can be posed, and afterwards to check with the person before publishing their remarks. He then added, more informally, that reporters shouldn’t shove a microphone right up into someone’s face or mouth.
Oli said that questions should not be put to someone by thrusting a microphone at them without first asking permission.
