Kathmandu, September 20
The Foreign Ministry has set up an environment diplomacy section in a bid to institutionalise and make effective the diplomatic endeavours on climate and environment. The section was established for the first time at the Foreign Ministry in view of the increasing impact of climate change in Nepal and the urgency of proper and adequate responses, according to the Foreign Minister’s secretariat.
Based on the Organisation and Management Survey, the section comes under the division looking after the UN and specialised agencies. Nepal has been actively attending the national, regional and international forums dwelling on climate change and environmental conservation. The facility is expected to advance coordination and institutional measures.
In addition to facilitating climate diplomacy in international conferences and events, the section builds coordination with the national bodies. In this connection, Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said climate diplomacy should not be limited to international conferences and events but should be advanced in a long-term and institutional manner.
