Two-way traffic has resumed along the Prithvi Highway at Krishnabhir in Dhading after authorities opened a new track, bringing relief to motorists after an 18-day disruption.
The highway had been blocked since August 30 after the Trishuli River flood washed away a section of the road at Krishnabhir. The flooding occurred four days after the devastating Bhotekoshi floods.
Authorities had tested the newly constructed track on September 13 by allowing several heavy vehicles to pass through. Work continued afterwards to complete and strengthen the track.
The District Administration Office, Dhading, had decided on Wednesday to fully reopen the highway from 6am Thursday.
Chief District Officer of Dhading Laxmi Pandey said the decision was taken after concerned agencies worked continuously to construct a new track at the damaged section.
According to the District Police Office, vehicles have been operating along the Prithvi Highway in both directions since early Thursday morning.
However, the administration has warned that several sections of the highway remain vulnerable to road subsidence, landslides and falling rocks and soil.
Authorities have urged drivers and passengers to exercise caution while travelling along the highway.
The reopening of the Prithvi Highway is expected to make travel to and from Kathmandu easier.
While the highway remained blocked, large and small vehicles travelling along the route had been using alternative roads to enter and leave the federal capital.
