CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli has said rulers who suppress people’s voices and act in an oppressive and tyrannical manner will eventually face public resistance and fall.
Oli made the remarks on Sunday while addressing journalists from the print media after receiving their memorandum.
“Those rulers who are oppressive, who exploit people, who are anti-people and tyrannical, who suppress others’ voices and do not allow others to speak — such rulers will face opposition,” Oli said.
“People will oppose such rulers, and such rulers will eventually perish,” he added.
Oli said the principle that oppressive rulers cannot survive indefinitely is reflected in religious teachings as well and remains relevant today.
“That was the truth, and it remains true today. It is something the rulers of today also need to understand,” he said.
‘Anti-freedom moves cannot last long’
Oli also said recent regressive, narrow-minded and anti-freedom moves would not be sustainable for long.
“Regressive moves, narrow-minded moves and anti-freedom moves cannot continue for a long time,” he said.
He urged journalists in the print media not to give up their efforts and to remain patient while continuing to speak out.
“Have a little patience, but don’t just sit and wait,” Oli said, quoting poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota’s message that no one becomes a winner without fighting.
Oli said the issues raised by the journalists were legitimate and assured them that the UML would raise their concerns both inside and outside parliament.
He also said he had personally been involved in the struggle for equality and freedom for around six decades.
Oli recalled that he first read the UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights about 60 years ago, saying their emphasis on equality and freedom inspired him to continue advocating for those principles.
