Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has claimed that no leader has been barred from taking part in the party’s 15th General Convention. He said the convention would go ahead as per the scheduled timeline, and that all leaders and cadres would be able to participate in it.
Speaking at a programme organised in Kathmandu on Friday, President Thapa said the lower-level convention process would begin on September 20, with the central convention starting on October 2.
“No friend has been barred from taking part in the convention; all friends will participate in the convention, and there will be competition,” he said. “Whoever gets the responsibility will remain in leadership. We must also embrace those friends who don’t get responsibility through competition, and unite the party by taking everyone along.”
President Thapa pointed out that while internal competition would settle matters within the party, restoring the public’s broken trust remained Congress’s main challenge. He said the party was serious about the fact that dwelling only on internal problems would further weaken its relationship with the public.
“The convention will only sort out matters within the party for now. We will need to restore the public’s trust, and we are setting out on that journey of restoration,” he said. “As soon as the convention concludes, we will need to go across the country. We will reach all 77 districts, going village to village.”
President Thapa announced that immediately after the convention and Dashain, Congress would run a special nationwide campaign to improve its relationship with the public and win back their trust.
