Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has urged the government to conduct an impartial investigation into the incidents of September 8 and 9 and take action against everyone found to have been involved.
In a video message issued on the occasion of BP Memorial Day, Thapa recalled that his own house was set on fire on September 9. He said, however, that the suffering of young people who were killed or injured in the incidents was far greater than his own personal pain.
Thapa said those responsible for the state crackdown on the peaceful protest on September 8, 2025 must be identified, as should those who infiltrated the protest and incited violence. He also called for an impartial investigation into the destruction of public property, including Singha Durbar and the courts, on September 9, 2025.
“Reactions expressed in the heat of the moment should be forgiven. But those who exploited the situation to commit crimes should not be forgiven. They must be punished,” Thapa said.
Recalling the government’s commitment to conduct an impartial investigation into the September 9 incidents, he questioned how far the investigation had progressed. He also demanded the release of the full report of the study into the September 8 incidents.
Thapa said everyone responsible for the crackdown and incitement of violence on September 8, as well as those who committed crimes on September 9, must face legal action. “Only then can the state move forward on the path toward becoming an accountable state,” he said.
